What is the ITI Spanish Network?

The ITI Spanish Network is a language network associated with the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. We exist to promote the continuing professional development (CPD) of translators and interpreters working with Spanish, Basque, Catalan or Galician.

Back in the days when networks were standalone groups of people coming together to support new freelance translators, two former renowned translators Enrique Bonail and Santiago de Domingo organised an event at the Instituto Cervantes in London over 25 years ago. It proved so popular that former ITI member Montserrat Oriol decided to revive a dormant Spanish network in 1999, instituting a committee to organise a proper membership base with the idea of holding social and professional events.

Enrique, Santiago and Montserrat were instrumental in injecting the network with a life of its own. The committee grew from a 3-person team pre-internet days, with many volunteers joining and helping it develop and support a network of translators and interpreters adapting to a rapidly progressing digital world. The network is now facilitated by a 9-person committee.

We have an annual membership period (1 May to 30 April), which costs £6 for all ITI membership categories. We offer our members:

  • Events, including webinars, workshops, in person-training and social gatherings
  • A mentoring scheme open to both newcomers to the profession and those with more experience
  • CPD-specific grants to put towards attendance fees or travel costs
  • Bursaries towards MITI assessment fees (Spanish language routes), available to members who’ve been with us for 2+ years
  • An e-Group forum for networking and discussion
  • This website with information about the network and our latest news.
